The term “Ashtanga” is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Ashta,” meaning eight, and “Anga,” meaning limb or body part. Thus, Ashtanga represents the integration of the eight limbs of yoga into a cohesive and holistic system. These eight limbs form the philosophical foundation of the Ashtanga Yoga tradition and include:
- Yama (moral codes)
- Niyama (self-discipline)
- Asana (posture)
- Pranayama (breath control)
- Pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
- Dharana (concentration)
- Dhyana (meditation)
- Samadhi (oneness with the self)

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and athletic style of Hatha Yoga, characterized by a fixed sequence of postures organized into six series. This practice emphasizes vinyasa, the smooth transitions between poses, while focusing on the synchronization of breath and movement. Although it is physically demanding, Ashtanga Yoga also fosters mental clarity and cultivates inner peace, making it a comprehensive approach to both physical and spiritual well-being.
